Dean's Musings

“Reading Ahead . . . “

I am a Harry Potter fan.  I have seen all six of the Harry Potter Movies multiple times (with the exception of the last one).  We have all five of the movies that have been released on DVD.  The movies are based on the seven book series written by JK Rowling.  After watching the sixth movie July 15th (release day for the movie), I decided that I wanted to know how it all comes out . . . will good triumph over evil; so, I purchased the seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  The book has been out for two years but I have heard little about its content.  This last book has been subdivided into two movies—one scheduled for release next summer, and the last scheduled for release during the summer of 2011.  I just couldn’t wait for the movies to know how it all ends.  I have read around 575 pages of the 755 pages in the book.  I can’t remember the last time I read fiction (even if it is a children’s fiction book).

I have found myself getting caught up in the story; when one chapter ends on a “cliff hanger” ending, I have kept reading even though it was late because I just had to know that Harry escaped the trap.  It all sounds silly—and yet I am no different than most people—I want to know how it all comes out in the end.

This fall Matt is going to share a sermon series at The Well on the theme:  “The End of the World.”  There is much speculation about how the world is going to end . . . and when.  I have just purchased a book entitled 2012 which contains a number of predictions from various cultures regarding when and how the world will end.  There is a movie set to be released in November by the same title.  Nicholas Cage starred recently in a film entitled “Knowing” that also depicts “end of the world” ideas.

If you want to know how it is all going to end, read Revelation 21:1ff.  The “good guys” (male and female) win!  Jesus died two thousand years ago to make us winners; the price of admission into eternity has already been paid.  That’s one ending I already know about.
